Cindy works for Friends as our education coordinator. With the help of our volunteers and a communications class at James Madison University, we have developed a presentation,“The North Fork: My River, My Community, My Choice” that we would like to present to your group. Cindy has made up a schedule for 2010 and would love to be a part of your next meeting!

In addition to Cindy’s presentation we are also offering a series of workshops in partnership with the Shenandoah County Parks and Recreation Department.

Come and take part in these wonderful workshops to learn about things that you can do in your own yard to help the river and the environment!

2010 Educational Workshops

Cindy has put together another year of exciting Workshops through the Shenandoah County Parks & Recreation.

To see how to register on-line, visit: www.scpr.info or call their office at 540-984-3030 or print out the PDF at the right.

Learn How to Make a Rain Garden

Instructors: Jim McGlone, Department of Forestry and Lynne Phillips, Garden Center Owner
April 1 (Thursday), 6:30 pm-8:00 pm – $10 for FNFSR members, $15 non-members
Natural Art Garden Center, Toms Brook, VA

In this workshop, you will learn how to create your own rain garden using a variety of native plants and wetland edge vegetation, such as wildflowers, sedges, rushes, ferns, shrubs and small trees.  A rain garden is a planted area that is designed to absorb rain water runoff from roofs, driveways, walkways, and lawns. Rain water is collected and stored in the rain garden, and is allowed to soak into the ground, as opposed to flowing into storm drains, streams and the Shenandoah River, which causes erosion, water pollution, flooding, and less groundwater.
Some rain garden plants will be offered for sale at a discount by Natural Art Garden Center for participants.
