Cindy recently began working with Friends as a community education coordinator. With the help of our volunteers and a communications class at James Madison University, we have developed a new presentation,
“The North Fork: My River, My Community,
My Choice”
that we would like to present to your group. Cindy is making up a schedule for 2008 and would love to be a part of your next meeting!

In addition to Cindy’s presentation we are also going to offer a series of workshops to be offered in partnership with the Shenandoah County Parks and Rec.

Come and take part in these wonderful workshops to learn about things that you can do in your own yard to help the river and the environment!mailto:cindy.frenzel@fnfsr.orgshapeimage_2_link_0

Make & Take Rain Barrel Workshop
Saturday, May 10, 2008, 10-11:30 am
Sponsored by the Potomac Conservancy

Creating a Rain Garden -
Saturday, May 17, 2008, 9-12 pm
Instructor: Jim McGlone, Fairfax County Forester, Va. Dept of Forestry.

A rain garden is a planted area that is designed to absorb rainwater runoff from roofs, driveways, walkways, and lawns. Rain water is collected and stored in the rain garden, and is allowed to soak into the ground, as opposed to flowing into storm drains and streams which causes water pollution, flooding and less groundwater. Rain gardens can cut down on the amount of pollution reaching creeks and streams by up to 30%.
In this workshop you will help to create a rain garden using a variety of native plants and trees. You will also learn how to create your own garden and the kinds of plants used--a selection of wetland edge vegetation, such as wildflowers, sedges, rushes, ferns, shrubs and small trees.

Riparian Forests: How and What to Plant to Protect Rivers and Streams -
Saturday, May 17, 2008, 1:30 - 4 pm
Instructor: Joe Lehnen, Area Forester, Virginia Department of Forestry

Riparian planting or planting along waterways is an important way of improving the quality of storm water that goes into streams and rivers. Planting trees can significantly reduce flooding and pollution of the Shenandoah River as well as enhance the beauty of your property.

During this workshop you will visit areas where riparian forests have been created to serve a buffers to protect rivers and streams in Shenandoah County. You will also learn how to create your own riparian area, and which government programs are available to help you.
