Cindy works for Friends as our education coordinator. With the help of our volunteers and a communications class at James Madison University, we have developed a presentation,“The North Fork: My River, My Community, My Choice” that we would like to present to your group. Cindy has made up a schedule for 2010 and would love to be a part of your next meeting!

In addition to Cindy’s presentation we are also offering a series of workshops in partnership with the Shenandoah County Parks and Recreation Department.

Come and take part in these wonderful workshops to learn about things that you can do in your own yard to help the river and the environment!

2011 Educational Workshops

Cindy has put together another year of exciting Workshops through the Shenandoah County Parks & Recreation. To see how to register on-line, visit: www.scpr.info or call their office at 540-984-3030 or print out the PDF at the right.

Make and Take Your Own Compost Barrel with Friends and Natural Art Garden Center

When: Thursday April 28, 2011  from 6 - 8:30 pm

Where:  Natural Art Garden Center in Toms Brook, VA.

27358 Old Valley Pike

No experience necessary for this workshop where you will build your own rotating compost bin using a large recycled barrel and a wooden stand. All hardware, tools, supplies and instructions will be supplied to help you build a backyard compost bin that you can take home and use the same day. Composting helps you save money by making your own organic garden fertilizer and it is part of the three R’s of recycling: reducing, reusing and recycling kitchen and yard waste; and best of all it keeps waste out of the landfills.

12 and up may attend. Those under 18 should have a parent or guardian present. More than one person or a family can attend at one cost if they are working on the same Compost Bin.

Visit www.scpr.info to register on-line with Shenandoah County Parks & Recreation or call their office at 540-984-3030.

Friends' announces our second annual teacher professional development workshop - June 15-17, 2011!

Public and Private school teachers in  Shenandoah County will have the opportunity to participate in a 3 day summer workshop focused on learning about the river in their backyards - it's challenges and it's potential for use as a teaching resource.  There is a 4th meeting for evaluation of project and lesson plans that are developed as a result of the 3 day workshop.  Professional development credit is available.  Applications are available by calling Cindy at 540-459-8550 or emailing her at Cindy.Frenzel@fnfsr.com.

Central High School is being recognized for the 2nd year in a row as a Virginia Naturally school.

The goal of the school recognition program is to recognize the efforts undertaken by Virginia schools that increase the environmental awareness and stewardship of its students. Fifty two schools are being recognized this year; five schools have been recognized for 10 years since the start of the program.

Congratulations!
